Transfer of Credit Policy

Students are permitted to transfer in general education courses. GHC does not accept nursing courses of any kind from any other institution. GHC reserves the right to deny transfer of credits for any reason. Students who choose to transfer credits must provide all transcripts to the admissions department by orientation. Any transcripts received after the start of a student program will not be accepted.

The following criteria are used by the Registration Department to determine credit transfer eligibility:

  1. The accreditation of the institution.
  2. The number of credits/hours of the course.
  3. Course descriptions.
  4. Grade received in the course.

The following courses are eligible for transfer to the RN-BSN program:

General Education Courses:

  1. General Psychology (3 credits)
  2. English Composition (3 credits)
  3. Developmental Psychology (3 credits)
  4. Intercultural Communications (3 credits)
  5. Diet and Nutrition (3 credits)
  6. Anatomy & Physiology I (4 credits)
  7. Anatomy and Physiology II (4 credits)
  8. College Mathematics (3 credits)
  9. Pharmacology (4 Credits)

Nursing Courses:

  1. Fundamentals of Nursing (4 credits)
  2. Maternity Nursing (3 credits)
  3. Maternity Clinical (1 credit)
  4. Psychiatric Nursing (3 credits)
  5. Psychiatric Clinical (1 credit)
  6. Medical Surgical Nursing I (5 credits)
  7. Medical Surgical Clinical I (4 credits)
  8. Medical Surgical Nursing II (5 credits)
  9. Medical Surgical Clinical II (4 credits)

The following courses are eligible for transfer to the RN program:

  1. General Psychology (3 credits) within 10 years
  2. English Composition (3 credits) within 10 years
  3. Developmental Psychology (3 credits) within 10 years
  4. Intercultural Communications (3 credits) within 10 years
  5. Diet and Nutrition (3 credits) within 10 years
  6. Basic Computers (1 credit) within 10 years
  7. Anatomy & Physiology I (4 credits) within 5 years
  8. Anatomy and Physiology II (4 credits) within 5 years
  9. College Mathematics (3 credits) within 5 years
  10. Medical Terminology (1 credit) within 10 years

The following courses are eligible for transfer to the PN program:

  1. Anatomy and Physiology I (81 clock hours) within 5 years
  2. Anatomy and Physiology II (81 clock hours) within 5 years
  3. Diet and Nutrition (24 clock hours) within 10 years

Transfer Credits for GHC Practical Nursing Graduates

Graduates who delay enrollment (a semester following) into the Associate Degree Program can only transfer credits for the following courses:

  1. Anatomy & Physiology I
  2. Anatomy & Physiology II
  3. Fundamental Skills
  4. Medical Terminology
  5. Nutrition

Transfer Credits for Active Licenced Practical Nurses (Non-GHC graduates):

Prospects that hold an active Licence in Practical Nursing will receive the following transfer credits:

  1. Anatomy & Physiology I
  2. Anatomy & Physiology II
  3. Medical Terminology
  4. Nutrition

Students who have been away from GHC for an extended period of time will be evaluated on a case by case basis. Classes taken at GHC over 5 years ago will have to be repeated.

Taking Courses Elsewhere

Courses taken elsewhere may be transferred to GHC if the course is not offered and permission is granted. When permission is granted, a student should:

Obtain course descriptions for any course(s) of interest at another institution.

Discuss plans for completing coursework elsewhere with an academic advisor and secure his or her signature before proceeding.

Administration is responsible for the decision to approve or deny coursework for transfer as well as for approving a course as meeting a perspective designation.

Return the completed Request to Study Elsewhere form to Registration.

After Completing the Course, a student should:

Forward an official academic transcript to GHC; direct academic transcripts to GHC, Office of the Registrar, 6101 Stevenson Ave, Alexandria, VA 22304. No outside coursework will be posted to a GHC record until an official academic transcript is received from the institution attended. All courses must be completed and a transcript must be submitted by the end of the current semester.
